Age Wise Exercise promoting Aging in Place

ree

The desire to age in place, most likely with our loved ones, has become the new norm, however supporting this stretches beyond political, economical, social and geographical areas. The home, neighbourhood and community play an important role when it comes to quality of life (QoL), health and well-being with those aging in place.

Maintaining our autonomy and independence for as long as possible is a life long goal for most of us. However, our goal should not only be an extended lifespan, but also aim to increase our Health -span.

The financial benefits of aging in place compared to institutionalized care have been made clear through studies. Policies and governments are promoting aging in place, but to do so requires well-being. Our medical model is slowly shifting towards a health promotion model, which is focusing more on prevention through exercise, nutrition and self-care.

Over the next couple of months I would like to focus on the importance of exercise in preventing cardiovascular disease, maintaining a healthy endocrine system, avoiding sarcopenia (muscle atrophy), promote balance and cognitive function in order to avoid frailty.

World population cohorts over 60 years of age will increase from 11% (2006) to 22% (2050). The importance of leisure participation and exercise to enhance QoL has never been more important. Our Age Wise exercise community is on the right track, logging in on a weekly basis, staying active as often and frequently as we can will certainly help ensure our mobility, flexibility, strength, balance and stamina to fulfil our goals of aging in place while enjoying quality of life.
