How we plan to live 2024

Last week an interesting article caught my eye. Unlike other health articles often sensationalizing health facts this one reflected evidence based scientific facts. Through my studies we looked at the “blue zones” (areas in the world with the highest centenarian populations) e.g., Okinawa, Japan and Sardinia, Italy. Similar lifestyle choices in these geographic areas are believed to have led to low rates of chronic disease, longevity and a general sense of health and good quality of life.
The author acknowledged that “genetics play a role in the longevity lottery”, but how we live our lives account for more than 90% of our health outcomes and longevity.
Perhaps we can incorporate the following 8 things in 2024:
1. Exercise regularly
2. Eat healthy
3. Drink moderately
4. Don’t smoke
5. Get enough sleep
6. Maintain strong relationships
7. Challenge your brain
8. Manage your stress
According to the researchers we can extend our lives with 12-14 years (12 = men and 14 = woman) if we adhere to these lifestyle changes. Although it is best to make these changes at a younger age, it is never too late according to Dr Stephen Schimpff, a retired internist, aged 82.
I look forward to our regular exercise sessions and healthy lifestyle discussions this coming year and would like to wish you all health, and happiness for 2024.
